Vitamin D3 & Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

I recently read media accounts of research showing that taking supplemental vitamin D wasn’t helpful for supporting the bone health of women.

I find this kind of medical reporting upsetting and manipulative in a way that discourages individuals from taking more proactive control of their own health.

I’m not privy to the motives behind the research, or to the dosages and forms of vitamin D that were used. What I do know is that the implications of these stories is that vitamin D supplementation isn’t really helpful. And this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Vitamin D deficiency is a commonly overlooked deficiency that can severely impair the function of our immune system.

Even in sunny Florida (remember that vitamin D is the ‘sunshine’ vitamin) vitamin D is commonly deficient and can leave one vulnerable to autoimmune illness … like Hashimotto’s Thyroiditis or Grave’s Disease.

In my practice I use vitamin D3 supplementation with all patients, both as a preventive and treatment measure, because of its immune regulating functions, safety, and affordability.
