Can Healing Make Me Feel Worse?

by | Aug 2, 2012

The answer is ‘Yes’ … with an explanation. Since the healing process involves tissue repair, as well as cellular detoxification, healing can often be a complex process that involves some temporary discomfort.

This is a very different process from the suppression of symptoms that’s triggered by pharmaceutical drugs.

Healing can often result in a temporary exacerbation of symptoms (try explaining that to a patient) that’s accompanied by greater fatigue.

Precautions, such as drinking plenty of water, proper nutrition, and getting extra rest, can be taken to minimize the impact of healing reactions.

These healing reactions have been an accepted aspect of the natural healing process, and referred to by a variety of names, such as, healing crises, detox reactions, and Herings Law of Cure.

A more recent understanding of this healing process has been described in the META-Medicine literature. The two phase chart below shows how the autonomic nervous system responds to emotional stress.

The red phase, the sympathetic phase, reflects the time when we’re reacting to emotional stress. This is the time when we’re stressed and preoccupied with an issue, thinking too much, and having difficulty sleeping.

The blue phase, the parasympathetic phase, is the period that comes after the stress is over. The blue phase explains why we get ‘sick’ … after a stressful time is over, as when we leave a stressful work environment and then get sick on vacation, or why giving up caffeine can produce headaches and nausea.

This brief description of the two phase chart is the ‘Cliff Notes’ version of a very involved process, that goes a long way in explaining the true nature of healing symptoms … that are often misconstrued as symptoms of illness.
