It’s becoming more and more obvious that the ‘stem cell’ debate is really about our willingness, or resistance, to learn how to activate our own stem cells.
Remember that stem cells are those undifferentiated cells in our bodies that have the potential to become specialized cells when they’re needed … for organ healing and repair.
The new brain science that’s confirming our potential for neurogenesis (the ability to grow new brain cells throughout our lives) suggests that we must be stimulating the genes in stem cells in order for this to happen. Neurogenesis is triggered in part by positive emotions, novelty, good diet, and physical exercise … and the inhibition of the stress response.
In How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body, author David Hamilton, Ph.D. suggests it’s logical to assume that the genetic material in stem cells is triggering these cellular repair processes. He also shares research confirming that stem cells residing in our bone marrow are responsible not only for the creation of new immune system cells, but for skin, heart, and brain cells as well.
In the Psychobiology of Gene Expression (not required reading by the way) the the award winning scientist Ernest L. Rossi writes, “Many of the so called miracles of healing via spiritual practices and therapeutic hypnosis probably occur via … gene expression in cells throughout the brain and body”.
When we view clinical experiences of healing in the context of these new scientific findings it’s looking like a sure bet that we have a measure of influence over our health … and the creation of newer, healthier cells … that far surpasses what is acknowledged in conventional medicine.
The research is ongoing, but what we know to date is that positive emotions and outlook, supportive relationships, good food and a moderate amount of exercise all contribute to a more beneficial pattern of gene expression and health.
Combining the factors above with the belief that cellular repair and renewal is possible … along with a daily practice that’s sure to inhibit the stress response … puts us on the the front line of stem cell research.
