Next, I learned that relational injuries early in life can program the HSP’s highly sensitive system in ways that contribute to diverse physical and emotional complaints that are often poorly understood or treated by conventional medicine.

This wasn’t necessarily good news, but did help to deepen my understanding of myself and to offer myself a dose of much needed self-compassion.

Then came encouraging news from therapeutic breakthroughs in neurosciece. The news was that an individual could learn to reprogram their autonomic nervous system (ANS) to release past stress-induced programming and free up potential for their healing and wholeness.

The key ingredient to reprogramming the ANS …. is ‘sensitivity’ to inner, bodily-felt experience with a heart-felt, caring presnece. The closest technical term for this style of attention is called ‘interoception.’ It’s not so much about ‘thinking or understanding’, but more about a special way of noticing bodily felt feelings with sensitivity and an added dash of empathy for our felt parts.

Finally, I had my user’s manual for unlocking the innate healing wisdom of my mind and body!

Now I could use my sensitivity, empathy, and intuition to help myself repair my nervous system instead of continuing to beat myself up for being ‘so different’.

This attention style is a special way of experiencing feelings rather than ignoring or resisting them. From an Energy Medicine perspective you’re connecting with your life force or Qi and giving it permission to carry you authentically forward in life. From a spiritual perspective, you’re allowing a partnership with spirit to gift you with grace.

From a neurological point of view you’re allowing your heart and brain to synchronize, to communicate coherently, and you’re inviting your left and right hemispheres into a partnership to do what you can’t do for yourself without their combined support.

Learning this subtle, inner art of safely welcoming feelings activates the neural circuitry and positive neuroplasticity that’s needed for reprogramming the ANS in support of self-healing.

This nuanced quality of embodied attention is not the cultural norm, in fact it’s foriegn to most, but can be learned and refined with practice.

I’ve put the best of what I’ve learned to date into the ‘Embodied Mindfulness for the HSP’ offering where you can practice a variety of skills that with time will help you repair your nervous system to support self-healing and greater resiliency.

This embodied mindfulness approach is based on 35 years of my clinical work, trauma-related neuroscience, Energy Medicine, Somatic Psychology, and HeartMath science.

My wish for you is greater ease and a more open-hearted capacity to share your joy and gifts.                                  Steve Templin
